Professional transfer and relocation: what help?

19/2/2025

A professional transfer, whether internal or external, is often accompanied by a move.

This article guides you through the various steps and aids available to successfully transfer your professional life. To learn more about the subject of professional mobility, I invite you to read this article.

Professional transfer and relocation: two major challenges to manage

When you are faced with a professional transfer and a move, several aspects must be taken into account.

In addition to adapting to a new workplace, it is essential to plan your move carefully. This process often involves administrative, financial and logistical procedures.

In addition, a transfer to another city or region may involve additional costs but you can also obtain financial aid.

Anticipate the costs associated with the move of a professional transfer

Before moving for a transfer, it is important to assess the costs associated with the move.

Whether it's renting a truck or professional moving expenses, these expenses can quickly add up. Fortunately, there are various professional transfer and relocation grants to support you in this process.

Financial assistance available for moving

Financing the move should not be an obstacle to professional mobility. There are several ways to alleviate your financial burden related to the move. Some are specific to the public sector, others are open to all private sector employees. Here is an overview of the main aids available.

CAF moving assistance

The Family Allowances Fund (CAF) offers moving assistance as part of a professional transfer, under certain conditions. This help is generally available to families with a dependent child or in the event of moving for professional reasons.

It makes it possible to reduce moving costs, by taking care of all or part of the costs. The CAF moving staff can guide you in the steps to follow. They will help you benefit from this assistance and inform you about the specific conditions required to request it.

The Mobili-Pass of Action Logement

The MOBILI-PASS® aid, which made it possible to finance part of the costs associated with professional mobility, was very successful, but its budgetary envelope for the year 2023 was fully used.

Therefore, as of July 1, 2023, no new applications have been accepted. Employees who have already submitted an application can contact Action Logement to follow up on their file.

It is advisable to find out about other mobility assistance systems offered by Action Logement or other organizations to compensate for this suppression.

The LOCA-PASS® advance

L'AVANCE LOCA-PASS® is an aid offered by Action Logement to facilitate access to rental by financing the security deposit required when signing the lease. This advance takes the form of a zero interest loan, free of charge, for a maximum amount of €1,200.

It is available to employees in the non-agricultural private sector, regardless of age, as well as to young people under 30 in vocational training (apprenticeship or vocational training contract).

The accommodation concerned must be the tenant's main residence, located in metropolitan France or in the French overseas departments, and be the subject of a lease or an occupancy agreement in a home or social residence. The repayment of the advance begins three months after its payment, with a maximum duration of 25 months and minimum monthly payments of €20.

In case of early departure from the accommodation, the remaining balance must be repaid within three months. It is important to note that the LOCA-PASS® ADVANCE cannot be combined with other aid of the same nature, such as that granted by the Housing Solidarity Fund (FSL), for the same housing.

To benefit from this assistance, it is necessary to file a file with Action Logement and to provide the required supporting documents.

The moving benefit

Some companies in the private sector offer a relocation bonus to their employees who are changing jobs.

This bonus is sometimes paid in the form of reimbursement of expenses incurred, or in the form of a lump-sum compensation. The amount of this bonus varies according to the companies and the collective agreements in place.

Specific aid in the public service

Civil servants can also benefit from specific assistance for their move. Indeed, the public service provides for mechanisms to reduce the costs associated with a professional transfer.

These aids can cover all or part of the moving expenses, depending on the terms and conditions of each department.

How to properly manage your professional transfer and move?

A move as part of a professional transfer requires careful preparation. It is essential to manage several stages so that everything happens in the best conditions.

1. Find out about available help

First of all, you need to find out about the financial assistance that can be granted to you.

Whether it is a moving grant, help from Action Logement or other specific assistance, these solutions can considerably reduce the costs associated with the move.

2. Choosing the right professional mover

The choice of the mover is essential in the context of a professional transfer. An experienced professional mover can assist you in all stages of the move.

In addition, it can provide you with an estimate of the costs so that you can assess the costs to be expected.

3. Organize your change of workplace

Changing the workplace also involves administrative procedures. If you change region or city, you may need to register at a new employment center.

But also, find new public transport or adapt to new working conditions.

Professional transfer and relocation: aspects not to be overlooked

In addition to financial and logistical aspects, a professional transfer and move also requires personal and professional adaptation. You may need to change your lifestyle, adapt to a new work environment, and create new connections in your new workplace.

The change of profession or sector

In some cases, a professional transfer may include a change of professional branch or profession. For example, you may have to explore new areas of activity or to work in a different position at another company.

This change can be a lever to boost your professional development and acquire new skills.

Professional transition management

The transition between your old and your new position must be well managed to avoid any loss of bearings. Depending on your situation, this could include professional retraining or functional mobility in another division of the company.

Managing this transition is crucial for a successful adaptation.

Coverage by your employer or other assistance

If you are in the private sector, your company could take care of part of the costs of your move as part of your professional transfer.

Depending on your collective agreement, your employer may also offer you a moving benefit. At the same time, you can benefit from additional assistance, such as that offered by the Mobili-Pass d'Action Logement.
